Daily Home Renovation Tips

Your first source for home energy conservation, improvement and ongoing maintenance ideas

Daily Home Renovation Tips header image 3

We write about our home renovation, home maintenance and home energy conservation experiences with our now 22 year old bungalow.

Each tip comes from our own personal experiences. We are not contractors. We are not renovation professionals. We are just like the vast majority who are home owners who needed both minor and major improvements to their home but have no experience with renovations.

Of course, no one is an island. All of our adventures have involved others outside our family. This includes our primary contractor, kitchen designer, installation specialists, as well as specialty and general retailers. While we will very rarely mention them by name (strangely they are a shy bunch :-) ),  their contribution to our renovation experiences will be included herein.

Lately we have been writing on the many, many aspect of home energy conservation and our experiences therein; there’s much to write about in this regard.

We should mention that if you are a manufacturer of a home renovation, home maintenace or home energy conservation product who is looking for some additional exposure for your product, please contact us. We have written many different article series on different products we have used in the past. However, be warned; if your product is more complext to install or use, or does not live up to it’s billing we will say so … as we have in the past on such products.

Remember, do not rely on one source or two sources of information for you to make any decision on any contractor, materials supplier or renovation technique….even from Daily Home Renovation Tips. Check out many sources of information, both those sites in our blog roll and others. The more information you have the better informed decision making you can make.

We hope these tips will be useful for any of you considering, about to start, or in the process of a home renovation!

We also want to hear from you about your own renovation or remodeling experiences, the good and not so good. So, please feel free to use the Comments function link on the right towards the end of any posting to leave us your thoughts and own experiences related to that post.

Lastly, should you wish to contact the author directly on anything relating to the site, our experiences , your renovation experiences, or even if you wish to inquire about sponsoring us for a month or two :-),  simply send us an email at the following address:

Great job on moving over your home improvement blog from Blogger to Wordpress. It looks like you put it together nicely.

If your house renovation is as successful as your “blog renovation” has been, you’re going to have one very lovely home!

I really like that you are passionate about energy conservation. I also like that you have a large section on basements ;-) you don’t find many people that have a passion for their basement!

I would like to know if my claim for a rebate has been worked on. It was done on Aug.14-2008 File #22P4E00082 in Barrie Ont.I was hoping for the money for X-mas and that is too late now .

    Hi Lorraine,

Great Q; however, I am not the person to be asking.

I’m simply a home owner just like you.

I suggest you contacdt which ever company you used for your ecoENERGY Assessment and ask them. They might investigate for you or they may give you the contact information for the department within Natural Resources Canada.

    where is your house located?

  • 8 Dan // Dec 19, 2008 at 7:53 pm

    Hi Mary,

    Thanks for the Q.

We are located in North America where we get significant snow in the winter and significant heat in the summer.

Was there a specific reason behind your Q beyond simple curiousity?

    Thanks,
    Dan

    Hi Dan:
Wonderful website. I am a novice at energy saving but when your new home *century home* propane bill is $500/month, you really have to start waking up. I was wondering if you live in Canada because I am definitely interested in your solar air heater and was not sure if we could buy the same in Canada (ontario) and if there are any taxes (customs, gst/pst). Iam also having a energy auditor come in next week as one of my pipes froze due to one wall that was not or not properly insulated and my house got flooded. Insurance may need to replace the kitchen cabinets, and therefore I want to make sure I insulate that wall properly before the cabinets are put back.

    Thanks again.
    Queenie.

    Hi Queenie,

    First, thank you.

Second, yes, the solar air heater we purchased and installed is Canadian based. You can access their web site and indicate you are interested by clicking on the picture of the solar air heater on the south wall of our home over there on the upper right area titled “Featured Energy Conservation Products Used in Our Home”.

Third, house flooded due to pipe bursting, wow. But, as far as the energy auditor, a few thoughts:

    a. the energy auditor should be your first step to participate in the ecoENERGY Retrofit program (see our ECOENERGY page for our experiences with this program.

    b. if the pipe did burst due to becoming frozen in a new home, you want a home inspector because the home would not have been built up to code for sufficient insullation. I am not a lawyer and do not give legal advice; however, if what you ’said’ is the case you might have recourse against the builder but only if it can be proven that the buiiding was not constructed up to code. At a minimum, you should talk with your insurance agent / broker / adjuster to find out what you need to do to ensure that the fix to the wall / plumbing is up to code.

    Dan
