Happy Independence Day!

American Flag In Notre Dame Statium With Scoreboard

Happy Independence Day! Last year three situations resonated with me regarding U.S. Patriotism during my first ever visit to the University of Notre Dame. The first was the trip during the week to see the (now) Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks play the Vancouver Canucks at the Madhouse on Madison. When they played the Star Spangled Banner, it seemed like the entire 19,000 or so inside the arena were singing. And, not just singing, but singing with a passion which was quite … [Read more...]

University of Notre Dame and South Bend Highlights

Golden Dome

Yesterday I wrote about, with pictures and videos, our Fighting Irish Game Day experiences. Today I thought I would wrap up this series of articles by selecting the highlights of our trip. Asking what were my highlights of my week long trip to the campus of the University of Notre Dame and South Bend / Mishawaka is like asking a parent which is their favorite child. However, here we go in no particular order. The people. It is true what they say, that everyone who you meet and talk … [Read more...]

University Of Notre Dame Fighting Irish Game Day

Knights of Columbus Steak Sandwich on Game Day

Yesterday we wrote a lengthy article with lots of pictures and videos about the Friday before a home football game at the University of Notre Dame stadium. Today we recount our experiences on Saturday, game day, at the home of the Fighting Irish. First we went to the tail gate of Leon, a local Notre Dame fan we met during the week. Unfortunately when he told us to meet him around 10 am he had forgotten that he had to take his son to his basketball game that morning. So, he did not … [Read more...]

University of Notre Dame Football Fridays

Ara Parseghian Statue

We have been writing (and sharing some of the pictures and videos we have taken) all week about our experiences in and around the campus of the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. Today we quickly (because it has been a very long day already and tomorrow is game day ... another long day) write about our activities on the Friday on campus before the football game vs Boston College. It rained very heard during the night and rain was forecasted for most of the day. However, we were … [Read more...]

University of Notre Dame, Luck Of The Irish and Fiddler’s Hearth

Gug and Four Horsemen Sculpture

We have been very, very fortunate ... some might say lucky ... on our trip to South Bend, Indiana and the University of Notre Dame. The first occurred when we received the Chicago Blackhawk tickets from Matt, which we wrote about yesterday. The second good fortune occurred when we crossed the border into the U.S.A. At customs, we ended up being assigned to a line in which the customs official seems to be taking and average of 7 to 10 minutes per vehicle. When it was finally our turn, we … [Read more...]

University of Notre Dame and The Chicago Blackhawks

DeBartolo Center for the Performing Arts - Regis Philbin Studio Theatre

Two days ago I wrote about and showed pictures from our touring of the campus of the University of Notre Dame. Yesterday, Harvey and I spent the day away from the Notre Dame campus to tour other attractions in South Bend. Wednesday was a very eclectic day. We started by going back to the University for a few specific items. First I wanted to go back to the Grotto to light a candle and say a personal prayer. It agree with those who say that visiting the Grotto is a unique experience … [Read more...]

Touring South Bend and College Football Hall of Fame

President Lincoln Carriage

After touring all day yesterday on the campus of the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, we planned to take a break and see some of the other sights in the area. We started at 'The Museums at Washington and Chapin', which included three different sights. We began with the Studebaker National Museum which had wonderful exhibits from the wagons they started to create when the brothers began in 1852 through  the Avanti which debuted in 1962. We spent all told about 2+ hours … [Read more...]

University of Notre Dame – The Athletic, The Souvenirs and The Spiritual

Notre Dame Heisman Trophies

Yesterday we wrote and showed some of the pictures taken from our first impressions of the campus of the University of Notre Dame from a life long fan's perspective. We now continue this series on our week in South Bend / Mishawaka area. Yesterday we spent all day at the campus doing three different types of activities. One article cannot even come close to all that we experienced, so I will try and summarize our experiences today and leave for later articles in future weeks for more … [Read more...]

First Impressions of University of Notre Dame Campus

Golden Dome

Well we have just finished our road trip to our hotel in Mishawaka, Indiana. It took just under 8 hours but with the catching up that Harvey and I did the drive did not seem to take that long at all. Here is a slide show with selected pictures of our travel. We went from Toronto to Sarnia and then across through Michigan, down to Indiana and then across to Mishawaka. Once we checked in around 5 pm or so, we headed to the University of Notre Dame campus for a very, very quick walkabout … [Read more...]

On The Road To South Bend and Notre Dame

Irish Guard and Touchdown Jesus

If you are reading article on its publication date, I should be on the road travelling to South Bend, Indiana to spend a week in and around the University of Notre Dame. It is a 7 to 8 hour drive from where I live east of South Bend, so I am told. As I have wrote previously, I have been a fan as long as I can remember. So, this vacation week sees me visiting for the first time ever the campus of the Fighting Irish, doing all the touristy things, and generally just trying to soak it all in. … [Read more...]

Notre Dame Football Tickets Have Arrived

Notre Dame vs Boston College

[cue music from Rudy] Two months and 1 day. Exactly two months and one day before, if my math is correct, I get to see a Fighting Irish of Notre Dame football game for the first time in South Bend, Indiana. At least I now have the tickets! They arrived late last week from Dave, a grad-student alumnus. Dave won two pairs in the alumni lottery, but is not using the pair for the Irish game vs Boston College. The week that we happened to have secured accommodations is that same … [Read more...]

South Bend Visitors Guides

Editor's Note: This article is part of a continuing series of a Subway Alumn's (my) first ever trip to South Bend, Indiana to both spend time in and around the University of Notre Dame on a football weekend and attend a game in person. To view all of the article in this series, simply select the following link to the Notre Dame page on our web site What better place to start planning a trip than to obtain free information, right? So, a week or so ago both Harvey and I separately use the … [Read more...]
