5 Ways to Add Style to Your Home

While you’ve more than likely spent a lot of time considering the color to paint your interiors, and agonized over which sofa to spend your dollars on, it’s the finer details that can really add interest to your home and turn it from a house to a home. Here are 5 ways to introduce stylish flair to your home that will make it stand out from the others in the neighborhood.

1. Stairs

Unless you’re carpeting your stairs, your stairs are an area that you can be creative with. More than just a passageway, your stairway can be used to add color and interest to what would otherwise be a rather non-descript foyer. You have options. You can paint them a color to either cleverly contrast or complement the color of the paints used in the rooms that are visible to them. This is an important point: you want to create a feeling of fluidity and continuation, and not make a jarring statement. Choose vinyl tiles or decals to decorate the risers; you can use as brave a pattern as you wish, as the small spaces won’t overpower, but just add interest.

2. Handles and pulls

Swap out the standard handles and pulls of kitchen cabinets, and add instead some with stylish merit. Perhaps your kitchen needs a little more glamour? Think faux crystal. Or, you may be looking for a more antiquated look, in which case a pewter pull with an ornate backplate would be ideal. Update your furniture by replacing the handles on chests of drawers, while your bedroom furniture may not match, by using the same handle on your dressing table and drawers you can connect them through how you style them.

3. Lights and fittings

You need your home to be sympathetically lit to create the ambience that you want to achieve. We use most rooms for a variety of functions, and by having dimmable lights you’re able to provide adequate lighting for all tasks. As well as a central light, choose wall sconces to help you obtain the level of light needed for the tasks – the Kichler lighting collection of wall sconces are suitable for any room. You may need extra lighting to benefit your dining room, or perhaps to illuminate your favorite piece of art. Whatever the reason, the lighting that you choose can add an extra level of style to your room.

4. Textiles

Your window dressings and drapes can be expensive to source, and are a big-ticket expense; however, the textiles that you choose to dress your rooms can be an inexpensive way to add color and interest. Choose rugs, throws and pillows to inject some pattern and color. Velvets and silks, faux fur and cashmere can instill a real sense of luxury and opulence.

5. Flowers and plants

With space being a premium, especially in cities, many people don’t have access to gardens, and so you can bring a little of the outside in. A little greenery in your house gives it an immediate update, whether you choose fresh blooms from the florist or a cheese plant, you will reap the benefits. Not only will you add beauty to your room, but you’ll be enabling any pollutants in the atmosphere to be converted into all-important oxygen. Remember to choose houseplants that are suitable for where you’re going to put them, since not all houseplants thrive in full sunlight!
