A short while back, way back at the beginning of the winter heating season, the 12+ year old humidifier in our house stopped working.
It old flow-through humidifier had never worked right, in my opinion, since we moved into the house almost 5 years ago now.
I had tried to replace the old humidifier’s pad hoping that would help it provide sufficient humidity in the house during the dry winter months.
Yet, this did not do much.
I even started to use an empty Windex spray bottle to spray water onto the humidifier’s pad several times a day which helped somewhat.
Now I had no choice.
Now I had to replace the humidifier.
After doing some research on the Internet, I decided to purchase the Aprilaire humidifier model 600M from a local heating and cooling company.
In one of our prior homes where we had lived for many years we had an Aprilaire humidifier and it worked wonderfully; so, why not use one again?
This flow through humidifier attaches to the air intake vent adjacent to the furnace. As the cold air is returned to the furnace, a portion of it passes through the water panel inside the Aprilaire house humidifier.
The water panel receives water at the top from, in our case, the cold water line feeding water into our natural gas furnace.
This humidified air is then returned on the left to the hot air which has passed through the furnace.
Part of the installation kit is the humidity control unit. In our case it is manually set. This component provides the instructions to the flow through humidifier when the water should flow down the water panel inside the Aprilaire humidifier (when the furnace is on) in order to achieve the set humidity percentage.
Within only a few hours I noticed the digital temperature / humidity device on the desk in my main floor office show an increased humidity percentage from 28% to 34%. The next morning, the reading has gone up all the way to 40%!
It has been more than a month now since we had the Aprilaire 600M humidifier installed and it has been working fantastic. I am quite pleased. All I have to remember to do in the spring is to set the humidity percentage and close the main valve so that the unit doesn’t try to humidify the already humid air!
As for the installation company; well, that is another matter.
They were several hours late (I had to call to find out what was going on). This resulted in them performing the installation while I was on a conference call which therefore prohibited me from taking installation pictures for you. And, they forgot to leave the extra water panel I had ordered until I, once again, called. That’s why you won’t see their name in this article.
In all the Aprilaire 600M humidifier, extra water panel and installation came to a total of $466.13.
