This includes the common A19 model (which fits in most table lamps and ceiling receptacles) and the PAR20 model which is commonly used in recessed ceiling light receptacles.
While we have replaced about 70% of all our home’s light bulbs with LED light bulbs, we are still looking for more.
Recently we were approached by Toshiba if we wanted to try some of the Toshiba PAR20 LED dimmable light bulbs at no cost to us.
We said, absolutely! I never knew that Toshiba offered LED light bulbs, did you?
Toshiba Dimmable LED PAR20 Light Bulbs
Here are the facts from the bulb packaging:
- “9.0 Watts
- 55 Watt equivalent
- 400 lumens
- 40,000 hours / 36.5 years estimated life
- Price – $43.99 USD each (Amazon.com)*
- I am told there are other on-line stores which sell this money saving LED PAR20 light bulbs as low as $35 so do your comparison shopping.
And, per their press release of July 13 2011, the Toshiba PAR20 LED light bulbs are also Energy Star rated.
How do these bulb facts compare to the PAR20 Home Depot EcoSmart and Phillips (also sold at Home Depot) we have previously written about? Here is the comparison taken from the Home Depot web site:
Phillips Ambient PAR20 LED
- 7.0 Watts
- 50 Watt equivalent
- 25.000 / 15 years estimated life
- Price – $34.98 CDN each (HomeDepot.ca)
Home Depot EcoSmart PAR20 LED
- 8.0 Watts
- 40 Watt equivalent
- 25,000 hours / 23 years estimated life
- Price – $21.97 USD each (HomeDepot.com)
Based on the above, the Toshiba PAR20 LED light bulb is estimated to significantly outlast either the Phillips Ambient or Home Depot EcoSmart PAR20 LED light bulbs (40,000 hours to 25,00o hours). With the initial high cost of LED light bulbs will see the Toshiba PAR20 LED light bulbs should save you money with its significantly estimated longer life.
All three will significantly reduce your electricity costs (9 vs 7 vs 8 Watt respectively).
Is The Toshiba PAR20 LED Light Bulb Truly Dimmable?
Yet for us, the Home Depot EcoSmart PAR20 LED light bulb gave the annoying hum when it was dimmed. I even tried to replace the dimmer switch with one that was means for LED light bulbs but they still hummed as I have written about previously.
I used the four PAR20 LED light bulbs from Toshiba I received to replace the Home Depot EcoSmart PAR20 LED light bulbs in our kitchen eating area.
Notice the four separate LED components within the bulb in the above picture. I would think that this provides a greater dispersion of the light vs a single LED component in some other LED light bulbs. This can be important as LED lighting tends to produce a more direct beam of light than CFL or incandescent light bulbs in certain applications.
Notice as well that with this LED light bulb’s surface being recessed just a little from the surface of the receptacle itself, you do not notice the grey on the surface unless you are staring directly at the installed light bulb when it is not on (because one doesn’t star at light bulbs when they are on, right? ); I can live with that.
Of course, they were just as easy to install as any PAR20 light bulb.
But would they give the annoying humming sound when dimmed?
Nope! Not a peep.
This is great because these four recessed ceiling lights are on a lot throughout the year during breakfast and dinner meals (especially in the winter with the fewer daylight hours) and many evenings with work done at the kitchen table.
It is so nice that these lights no longer hum; extremely nice!
I will pay more for no humming and much longer estimated product life.
So, the next time you need to replace any of your PAR20 light bulbs, consider the Energy Star rated Toshiba PAR20 LED light bulbs; especially if you plan on using a dimmer quite often with the light receptacle into which these PAR20 LED light bulbs will be used.
