Strawberries, My Favorite Backyard Garden Fruit

Backyard Strawberries 150x150 Strawberries, My Favorite Backyard Garden FruitYes, strawberries are indeed my favorite backyard garden edible fruit or vegetable, but not for why you think.

You know that my wife’s husband can be incredibly lazy at times.

That is me. icon smile Strawberries, My Favorite Backyard Garden Fruit

I just wish I had more time to be involved in all my different areas of interest which includes gardening.

However, time is not my friend.

Time is also not your friend.

I just don’t have the time right now to tend meticulously to the gardens around our home.

That is why strawberries are truly my favorite edible fruit or vegetable for any home.

Strawberry Plants are Perennials

Talk about a time saver.

Would you want to have to take the time to go out and purchase a few plants followed by more time to then put the new plants in the garden every spring?

Some say yes; however, not me as I just don’t have the time to do the same thing over and over and over again each year when there is an alternative.

Just like perennial flowers, strawberries are perennial plants; plant them once and they will come back every year.

And, each year they will come back in greater numbers.

Four years ago we planted only 4 strawberry plants in during the first spring in our current home.

Take a look at the picture below in the fourth spring.

Wow! Yes, from just four plants.

Strawberry Plants Need Little Maintenance

In the picture above you see a lot of weeds and grass in the strawberry garden.

Yes, that is my bad; again, I just don’t have the time to care for them.

Yet, they just keep growing and growing and growing.

Just look how thick the strawberry plants are in the above picture  after four years of neglect.

Save Money and Plant An Edible Garden

Planting an edible garden in your yard will save you money.

It is pretty simple; eat off the land vs spending money to buy the same food at the grocery store.

Now, strawberries do not cost that much.

And, when they are in season in your backyard garden they are also in season for your local farms; therefore, the price for strawberries will be much lower when yours are ready to be picked like the ones in our own backyard garden as shown in the picture below.

Yet, if you chose a perennial type of edible plant you should pay for it after likely just the first or for sure the second season.

Other than at least a little weeding, what I should also do is to apply some fertilizer in the early spring. As you can possibly see from the picture below, the 4 litre basket has a lot of strawberries because they are on the small size.

If I had at least added some Miracle Grow or other plant food in the spring I would think I would have larger strawberries.

However, even with these small size, these strawberries are just as delicious!

Last year I picked about five of these 4 litre baskets.

I think this year I’ll get enough for 5 or 6!

What do you do to have larger sized strawberries from your backyard home garden?
