The past week or so we have written and shown with many pictures how easy it is to install a toilet paper holder. And, it is actually easier to install a pivoting toilet paper holder because once anchored to the wall, you can lift the bar between the two ends to repair any minor damage to the wall in behind the bathroom accessory.
Today we finish the job.
Here is where we left things with our new Moen Banbury Pivoting Toilet Paper holder in the brushed nickel finish which we purchased at The Home Depot as part of its Renew and Redo Your Bath even (continuing until February 23, 2011):
Now that we have applied and dried three layers of drywall compound to the two small holes just inside the left end, before painting we applied one coat of primer. Notice in the picture below I am not just applying the primer to the repaired area but to the surrounding surface as well so it all will blend in at the end:
Regardless how small or large you should always apply primer before paint to any drywall repair. Since the original drywall surface would (usually) have had primer applied to it before the original paint, not to do the same to any repaired area could result in a different shade of the final paint you apply to that area.
Your purpose in all of these simple, simple steps is to make it appear at the end that there was no area in need of repair in the first place. If the repaired area has a different shade of paint, once the paint dries, it will be obvious something happened.
Once the first coat of primer has dried, see the directions on the can’s label, then you can apply the second coat. For us, since it was such a small area, as shown in the above picture, I placed the paint brush and plastic tub containing the primer in sandwich bags which were then placed in the refrigerator, rather than taking the time and wasting clean water to clean them both when I was going to use them just a few hours later.
Then about 15 minutes or so before I applied the second coat of primer (see picture below) I then removed them from the fridge, still in the sandwich bags, and placed them on the kitchen island so they could warm up to room temperature.
This is how it looked after the second primer coat was applied.
Next, after waiting another few hours for the second primer coat to dry, I then applied the first coat of the left over paint.
Even if it does not look like it needs it, I always apply a second paint coat. In the picture below, taken once the first coat of paint had dried, you can see that a second coat is definitely needed.
As with the application of the primer coats, I again placed the paint brush with the paint from the first paint coat application in its sandwich bag and then into the refrigerator between coats.
Then I applied, as shown above, the second coat of paint.
So, how did it turn out?
Above is one closeup picture once the second coat of paint had dried overnight.
And, then below is the complete finished product, having returned the one end of the toilet paper holder onto the anchor.
It looks like that new pivoting toilet paper holder had been there all along, right? No holes in the drywall from the anchor of the prior holder, no drywall compound, etc. That is the point and the end game of any home renovation or maintenance effort, whether in the bathroom or any part of your home.
I hope our experience installing our new Moen pivoting toilet paper holder helps you. Yes, you can do it … DailyHomeRenoTips.com and The Home Depot can help!
