Home Depot EcoSmart PAR 20 LED Lightbulb Review

Late in 2010, we wrote several articles on different LED lighting for the home.

This included many articles on The Home Depot EcoSmart brand 9 Watt A19 LED light bulb and where we used it in our home.

This also included articles on a 3 Watt PAR 20 LED light bulb sold by The Home Depot but not part of their EcoSmart line.

One issue I had with this 3 Watt PAR 20 LED light bulb was that it was, well, only 3 Watts. Because it was so low wattage, it was not dimmable; then again, who would need to dim this type of LED light bulb when it was only producing 3 Watts? In the picture below, the PAR 20 LED light bulb is on the left while the 50 Watt light bulb it would be replacing in our home is on the right.

Yet, it looked just like the 50 Watt non-energy saving PAR 20 light bulb we were using which is for appearances what I wanted.

Now, lets compare the no name LED light bulb to The Home Depot’s EcoSmart brand of the PAR 20 light bulb, pictured in its packaging below (so you know what to look for if you decide to purchase it for yourself). It is 8 Watts, which produces the equivalent lighting of a 40 Watt halogenlight bulb.

Per the packaging it is dimmable and you can use it for indoor and outdoor use. As well, with an expected life of 50,000 hours you can expect it to last 46 years and save you up to $200 over the life of the bulb, again per the packaging which I am quoting below:

“EcoSmart PAR20 bulb uses $40.00 of operational cost over its 50,000 hour life. A 40W halogen bulb uses $240 in operational cost over the same period resulting in savings of $200 per bulb. Savings based on electricity cost of $.12 per kilowatt hour. Based on life of 50,000, operated 3 hours a day, 365 days a year.”

For comparison, my cost of electricity from my most recent electric utility bill is not $.12 but $.07 per kilowatt  hour on average (different time of use rates). Yet, where I live the government indicates we can expect electric rates to go up 45% over the next 5 years. If I do the math, using a light bulb 3 hours per day every day over its 50,000 hour life would mean that the bulb would last around 46 years. So at the end of that time frame the cost of electricity for me will indeed, even if it simply increased after year 5 by the cost of inflation would greatly exceed $.12 per kilowatt hour.

If you are curious what the EcoSmart PAR20 light bulb looks like compared to the EcoSmart A19 light bulb, you can see both in the picture below:

Now, the issue I had with The Home Depot’s EcoSmart brand of PAR 20 LED light bulb which made me not select it initially for my home was its appearance. You can compare the 3 Watt PAR 20 no-name LED light bulb, on the left, to the 8 Watt EcoSmart PAR 20 light bulb on the right in the picture below.

Of course using this PAR 20 light bulb in a recessed lighting fixture in the wall would cause only the surface of the light bulb opposite that which is screwed into the pot light fixture to be seen.

However, the above picture shows the 8 Watt EcoSmart PAR20 LED light bulb on the left vs the no name 3 Watt version on the right.

I really didn’t think that the EcoSmart PAR20 version would like nice once installed in the recessed lighting fixture.

Was I wrong?
