In the previous article within our floor tile home renovation project series, it was decided that more concrete was needed to be laid down to level the floor before any further of the 24 inch by 24 inch floor tiles were laid.
Now, the contractors are ready to install the floor tile in the laundry room adjacent to the front foyer.
The starting point at the beginning of the day is shown in the picture below. There are already two floor tiles laid at the door opening to the front foyer:
Notice that there are already 2 of the 2 foot by 2 foot tiles already in place.
How large is the laundry room? It measures 12 feet long by 6 and a half feet wide.
So, how many tiles do you think can be laid in a single day with two tiles already in place? Will they be able to finish laying the tiles in the laundry room in a single day?
The answer is the first question is 13; the equivalent of 13 two foot by two foot tiles were laid in one day. The answer to the section question is, no, the laying of the laundry room floor tile was not completed. Why?
Well, while having such large floor tiles will save time and effort on the grouting, it takes more of an effort to lay each tile, making sure that it is perfectly level as well as perfectly level compared to the other previously laid tiles.
As well, each of the 2 foot by 2 foot tiles is quite heavy so it takes more of an effort to position and reposition.
Additionally, as each tile is quite heavy, the concrete underneath each tile is mixed with less water than normal making the cement stiffer to hold the weight of each tile when the cement is wet. The thicker cement takes more of an effort to spread, etc. prior to each tile being placed.
So, how much of the laundry room was able to be finished?
The picture below shows the progress made in one day. The contractor mentioned to me that if these had been smaller tiles, say 1 foot by 1 foot, he would have been able to complete the entire laundry room floor.
So, if you are planing your own floor tiling project, whether as a DIY or as a contractor, remember to account for the size of the tile; the larger the tile may look more eye appealing in the end, yet it will take more time to install.
