In the last article within this floor tiling renovation project series, we began to lay floor tiles at the end of the front hallway by the kitchen.
Today we look at the approach used for the area in the floor which was to receive the special floor tile insert.
It was decided to start with full tiles at the entrance to the kitchen as this area would be more visible than the area by the front door.
It was decided that this first day of floor tile laying would not focus on the special square area which would receive the tile insert.
Rather, a temporary full tile was put in the space which would later receive the tile insert. In the picture below you see this temporary tile which is in the middle right of the picture.
And by temporary, I mean that a full uncut tile was placed, on top of a full amount of the concrete compound for about 30 minutes.
Well, as part of laying each tile the tile laying professional used a level to ensure that each individual tile as well as the entire tiled floor surface was level.
By placing, temporarily, a full tile in the area to later receive the tile insert, one could then place the surounding permanent tiles with the properly aligned spacing.
As well, this temporary tile also allowed the use of the level to ensure they were individually level as well as the entire tiled floor surface.
Then, once sufficient surrounding permanent tiles were laid, the temporary tile was removed. In the above picture notice that the level is not too far away as it is used on every tile laid.
In the picture below you see more of the tile installed on the floor, including the curved tile around the base of the hand railing for the stairs leading to the basement.
Next time an issue surfaces regarding the level of the prepared front hallway floor. Select this link to the next article in our floor tile home renovation project series where we discuss the floor leveling issue encountered.
