Preparing The Front Hall Floor for Tiles – Part 1

In our last few articles we reviewed the preparation of the laundry room floor for our joint front hall and adjacent laundry room floor tiling project.

Today we look at the preparation of the front hall floor, after the original floor tiles have been removed.

Look at the picture below. It shows the marble edge of the front hall floor floor at the entrance to the living room on the opposite side from the laundry room. This was taken prior to the front hallway’s 23 year old original tiles were removed.

Now do you see in the picture beow the depression where the original marble was placed 23 years ago with the original tiling of the hall way?

That depression is 1/2 inch in height.

So, what was done was to use two of the 1/4 inch plywood, one on top of each other, to build up the 1/2 inch depression. First is a picture

The same approach was done for the area by the stairway leading to the basement as well as at the edge of the the front hallway floor by the living room both of which had the same narrow marble edging as part of the original floor tile.

In the picture below you can see the same 1/2 inch depression caused by the same original marble edge filled by the double plywood insert at the floor’s living room edge.

Now we see the build up using two pieces of 1/4 inch plywood, one on top of each other, at the basement stairway floor edge.

Next, we have a larger gap between the flooring of the front hall and the kitchen.

Yet, here the same approach was used, that being using multiple pieces of 1/4 inch plywood to build up that gap so it is level or flush with the existing 1/2 inch plywood sub floor of the hallway.
