Preparing Laundry Room Floor For Tiles – Part 1

In our continuing series on floor tile installation in our front foyer and laundry room areas, we showed the result of removing the 23 year old tile from the front foyer floor.

Today we look at the preparation of the linoleum covered floor of the adjacent laundry room which is to be covered by the same tile.

Start at the beginning, right?

So, first the washer and dryer were unhooked and placed in the garage.

Then the door to the closet in the laundry room was removed and placed in the garage as well.

The carpet covering part of the floor in that closet goes, exposing the bare plywood floor which will need addressing.

Next, the difference in height of the now bare front hall floor is compared to the floor in the laundry room. The different is just less than a 1/4 inch. Therefore, the plan is to lay 1/4 inch plywood on top of the laundry room’s linoleum floor to even the height between the front hall and adjacent laundry room.

As the height of the laundry room will be higher in the end due to the (A) 1/4 inch plywood plus the thin-set plus the floor tile, it was decided that the baseboard trim would need to come off. Otherwise, the increased floor height would cover about 1/2 of the existing baseboard trim.

In the front foyer, there is no need to remove the baseboard trim because it was already raised to accommodate the original tile.

Once the laundry room’s baseboard trim is carefully removed, we decided to not keep the original wiring for the phone jack. A phone in the laundry room? Haven’t see that before. I have seen (but not used icon wink Preparing Laundry Room Floor For Tiles Part 1 ) a phone in a bathroom at a hotel, but never a phone in a laundry room of a house. Out it goes. The baseboard is fully removed.

Next the floor of the laundry room is swept to remove the loose dirt.
