Bathroom Floor Tiling Project – Evening Height of Adjacent Room Floor

Last time we wrote about the approach taken to cut the tile over the floor vent opening.

Today’s topic in our continuing series on our bathroom floor tiling project has nothing to do with the floor tile, except that the top of the bathroom floor tile was a good 1/4 inch+ higher than the top of the carpet in the adjacent bedroom.

Now, some contractors would say that is good enough. The one who tiled the floor of another bathroom in our home certainly did. icon sad Bathroom Floor Tiling Project Evening Height of Adjacent Room Floor

However, let me show you a very simple solution Bennett used to even the eight of the carpet to that of the bathroom floor tile.

Let us start with a clear picture of the situation which you can see in the picture below.

Now, especially with our physically challenged daughter whose bedroom is adjacent to the newly tiled bathroom this difference in height would not be satisfactory. Simply placing a common threshold between the tile and the carpet would have looked like, well you know icon wink Bathroom Floor Tiling Project Evening Height of Adjacent Room Floor , and for our daughter’s special challenges would not have been optimal.

So, what Bennett did was to place a collection of long shims underneath the carpet.

What this did was to raise over an extended length the height of the carpet as it approach the entrance to the bathroom. Compare the picture immediately below to the first picture in this article to see the difference.

Once this was done, then the height of the bathroom tile and the height of the carpet were the same.

This then allowed the installation of a standard narrow threshold to be installed over the opening where the two meet.

So, whether one is going from the bedroom to the bathroom, as shown in the picture above, or from the bathroom back to the bedroom, as shown from the picture below, using a wheelchair, walker or canes, using shoes or bare feet, there is no mobility issue at all.

A very nice solution to what I have to believe is a very common problem.
