Scotts EcoSense Path Clear Non-Selective Grass and Weed Control Review

Last week we wrote about the new product from Scotts, EcoSense Weed B Gon, which is a spot treatment for a wide variety of common weeds in and around lawns.

There was much fan fare for this product because it met a need to help households get rid of weeds on their lawn yet meet the stringent environmental lawn in and around the Greater Toronto Area in Canada. You can see its effect on the weeds in our own lawns by referring back to the Scotts EcoSense Weed B Gon review we wrote, with lots of before and after pictures, about 24 hours after we had applied this new application.

Return tomorrow where we will show you the impact on the weeds and on the surrounding grass 7 days after this treatment’s application.

Now, what if one has the need to control and get rid of all the weeds in areas like patios, driveways, curbs, etc., including grass? What are we to do then?

Well, Scotts has this other product which we received in the same package from Scotts Canada which contained our sample of their Weed B Gon product, so we thought we would give it a try.

This product is called EcoSense Path Clear from Scotts. It is a spot treatment “For non-selective control of broadleaf and grassy weeds in and around the garden” according to the product label. The term ‘non-selective’ basicially means it is meant to kill every type of plant, be it a weed, grass or flower.

The product information inside the label states that it is uses a “Fast acting formula for non-selective spot treatment of individual weeds. Visible effects occur after treatment, and actively growing susceptible weeds are controlled within 1-2 days. Leaves no harmful residue in the soil.”

The product label information continues to say “Scotts EcoSense Path Clear Grass & Weed Control Spray application results in rapid burndown and control of the following annual weeds: common ragweed, chickweed, black medic and lamb’s-quarters and topgrowth control of the following perennial weeds: dandelion, plantain (broadleaved and narrowleaved), wild carrot and quackgrass.”

Finally, towards the end of the product labeling it is stated “Only contacted vegetation will be affected.”

So, how did it work for us?

One area I tried it was along the side of our driveway where we had grass from our lawn growing up in the space between the driveway’s edge and the adjacent curb. In this picture I had just applied the treatment to this area of grass

In this case, the crass shows definite signs of distress within about 8 hours following the application of the EcoSense Path Clear product, as shown in the picture below.

Another area with common problems with weeds growing was at the end of our paved driveway. You can see in the following pictures taken immediately after applying the EcoSense Path Clear product to the different type of low lying weeds and grass in the spaces where the asphalt driveway meets the curb of the road.

Then, again after only 8 hours from applying the EcoSense Path Clear treatment you can see the significant impact already on the weeds in this area.

This product is working for us as advertised, and much faster than I had expected. As with any type of such anti-weed / anti-vegetation treatment, be sure to read the product label carefully and wash your hands well after using.

I am very dubious about products that kill. I am wondering over what period of time ‘Pathclear’ is proven to not have leached into the ground. We have a lakeside residence and I am concerned that over time this product may find it’s way into the lake either from the dead roots of the plant disintigrating or by the dead leaves above the ground
breaking away and blowing into the water. This may seem far fetched but it seems to me the ingredients must go somewhere! Also ,we drink the water from our well.

    Hi Joan,

Good questions. I for one cannot directly answer them because I, like you, am a simple customer. As well I am not a scientist or a bioligist or a professional environmentalist.

However, as it meets Ontario’s environmental laws I have some faith in that (yes I know about putting one’s faith in government at any level).

I would suggest you address this concern directly with the company and see that they say.

Remember to return here to let us know, OK?

This product is 6.25% acetic acid. This is a non-toxic product safe for pets and family. To put it in perspective your standard household white vinegar is 5% acetic acid and pickling vinegar is 7%. I have kept my fist spray bottle and re-filled it with pickling vinegar with an added 2 Tbs of liquid hand soap. Excellent results and much cheeper!

Will path clear eventually leach through the roots of the grass in my walkway and kill the grass next to it?

  5. D Nickel says:

Just used Pathclear recently and it works for the most part. It had a fairly strong vinegar smell so I was pleased to see greg’s post verifying it as the main ingredient. However in this day and age where consumer’s right to be informed via labelling is a big concern and environmental concerns another I was surprised how hard it was to find out what was in this product. Nothing on product packaging and nothing on Scotts website. A side note a bit of wind came up while using and I now have orange stains on my shorts and t-shirt.
