Bathroom Floor Tiling Project – The Starting Point

Yesterday we started this new home maintenance project series about using SnapStone porcelain floor tiles in one of the bathrooms of our home.

Today we look at the current situation for the bathroom flooring. This will provide the necessary context for you to understand what we needed to do and why we did what we did.

First, as you can see in the picture below, the bathroom  has carpet flooring.

This was a conscious decision that my wife and I made three years ago during the major home renovation effort. Why? Well, the daughter who uses this bathroom has physical and other special needs. We felt that having carpet in the bathroom would reduce the risk that she would slip on wet tile flooring and if she did fall, the carpet would help to cushion her fall and reduce injury.

We had carpet in her bathroom in our prior home and it worked well. However, this was different carpet and it did not work as well for our needs, especially in the area around the toilet as you can see in the picture below.

So what did we need to do other than simply pull up the carpet and under-padding? Well, there was a cracked tile directly under the toilet so we would need to temporarily remove the toilet to replace the original tile with the SnapStone floor tile.

We needed to screw down the very squeaky floor boards underneath the existing carpet under-padding.

We would need to temporarily remove the skirt of the bathtub, seen below, which would allow us to replace the one row of tile with the SnapStone tile.

We would need to raise the level of the under floor so when the floor tile was layed, its surface would be at the same height as the carpet in the adjoining bedroom. We would also need to take into account the hole in floor for the heating vent, seen covered in the picture below by the vent register.

We would also be removing the baseboard along the bathroom wall and replacing it once the tile was in place and grouted.

The tile is perfect material for bathroom, where moisture and humidity are always present, if you decided to replace the carpet, then you can cover the tiles with special carpet, so the surface won’t slip and this will prevent injuries.
