Home Energy Savings Means Saving Money

February 11th, 2010 · No Comments

The issue with many of the energy savings articles and reports are that they focus on generally three topical areas.

First, they focus on the cost of energy rising without any useful ways for individuals to offset the rising costs. As if we don’t know the cost of electricity, heating oil, etc. goes up and up and up.

Second, they focus on new energy saving technologies like the latest and greatest solar panels which most do not understand, cannot afford, and will not save individual households money for many, many years down the road.

Or, thirdly, they focus on how harmful polluting emissions from coal generating plants or household furnaces run on heating oil or even natural gas without any suggestions on what individual households can do to reduce this impact and save money at the same time.

There are many, many ways in which households can save money, after tax money at that, on their electricity, natural gas, heating oil as well as clean water utility bills which will also ‘save the environment’ which will cost nothing, absolutely nothing to do as well as additional steps which cost the household just a little to do. Oh, and many of them are also very, very simple to do as well.

Don’t believe me? J That’s because many of these you already know but have forgotten.

Taken individually, these energy savings tips will save a little. When used consistently, they will save a lot.

What are some examples of such money and energy savings ideas?

What about cooking? Using the stove or oven uses energy. So, ideas which cost you nothing to do yet will save you money through lower utility bills include:

  • minimizing oven preheating;
  • cooking consecutive meals in the over for later use during the week
  • not boiling more water than needed, thawing frozen food before cooking
  • cutting food into smaller pieces to cook faster and,
  • making sure that your pots and frying pans actually rest flat on the burner to directly absorb more heat and thus reduce cooking time.

Want more? Ideas which will reduce the amount of electricity you use yet will cost you nothing include:

  • turning off lights when you leave a room or the house
  • using table lamps for direct lighting vs lots and lots of ceiling lights
  • hand wash dishes vs the dishwasher
  • unbundle wet laundry from the washing machine before placing them in the dryer do they dry more quickly
  • hang dry more of your clothes and use the dryer less often
  • unplug electric appliances, game consoles (but not the fridge or freezer!), home theatre equipment, and so on when not being used to avoid phantom electricity usage, and
  • unplug battery recharges for your phone, cell phone, iPod, iPad, computer, etc.

Just look around you, think whether there is a cheaper way to accomplish the same energy consuming task, and take action. You will be amazed how much money you can save when you put your mind to it.

What simple, no cost / low cost ways can you think of to start doing right now to save you money?
