Sony Handycam DCR-SR47 Review - 3

August 10th, 2009 · 2 Comments

Yesterday we continued our review of our new video recorder, the Sony Handycam DCR-SR47 hard drive camcorder. As part of that review, we provided two video clips taken of the forested ravine in our back yard.

Today I want to show two additional videos; ones with action and sound.

Both are of a stream that is in the ravine behind our home.

In this first one take a look at the clarity (or lack thereof, your choice) of the water as it makes its way downstream. It was taken from the bridge just over the stream. If you can’t see the video below, you can access it from going directly to this first link.

Also notice the sound of the rushing water. I think it’s pretty clear myself

Next, is the same stream. This time I took the video from beside the stream itself. Also notice again the sound from the standard microphone. Part way through the short clip you can hear at a cricket not too happy that I am interrupting it’s weekend sleep-in. :) Again, if you cannot see the video immediately below, you can access it by using this second video link to YouTube .

So, how clear was the water? Remember, I said that these would be video’s of a moving object. I can think of no harder moving object to capture than running water for clarity.

Sure, this camcorder does not product high definition.

Sure, I don’t have the many hundreds of dollars which it would have cost to purchase a high definition camcorder.

Thoughts?

I bought this very same Handycam for the same reason you did, the 60 gig hardrive. And for the money, how could you go wrong. I bought mine from Buy.com and they had an additional offer to get their credit card and save me an additional $30.00 so, I ended up only paying $254.00 for this camera so, check out Buy.com and I bought the carrting case and extra battery cuz with a 60 gig hardrive, you will nee another battery. I havent messed with the settings other than putting it on the easy setting and my video is greta . Also. I read something about a Zoom microphone, do you know anything about that? thanks, Tim

    Hi Tim,

The Zoom microphone feature as I understand it basicially is that the sound which will be picked up is that where the camera is filming.

So, if you are zooming in a distance, the sound which will be picked up is that which is occurring in the distance you are filming.

For example, the seats we ended up getting for the Notre Dame football game were on the 47 yard line. Well, the student section is in a corner of the end zone on the side opposite from our seats. Well, when I zommed in on the student section the film clearly picked up the student chants as well as the band which was facing the students (i.e. had their back towards our seats).

It’s easier to see an example than try to explain in words for me.

To see a demonstration, check out the video clips in this article on our game day experience. Towards the end of the article are some of the video clips that will show you the zoom microphone in action. The second to the last clip which ends with the team running out onto the field through the tunnel is a really good one re the zoom microphone feature I think.
