The past four days has seen us review most of the collection of ideas on how to reduce consumption of clean water inside the house which cost absolutely nothing to do.

Today we review the remaining ideas to reduce your home’s clean water consumption within our Un-Official Guide. While these may cost from a little to a lot of money, they will help to reduce the amount of clean water which is consumted within your home and save you money

Number 440, Put Bottle of Water in Toilet Tank. Again, I prefer to simply adjust the water level gauge inside the toilet tank, but this approach, just like using a bri

Number 441, Install Aerators on All Faucets. I guess I have been pretty fortunate as I have always, as long as I can remember, had faucets in our homes which cames with aerataors to add air to the water coming out and thus reduce the amount of actual clean water being used.

Number 442,  Install Water Saver Discs. I have to be honest. This is another suggestion submitted to us. I’m not really sure how these are any better than aerators on faucets which is what I am used to using to reduce the amount of water used from faucets and showerheads. They are pretty cheap (between $4 and $7 per disc). I see web sites in Australia (AUZ ;)  ) advertising them.

Number 443, Fix Internal Toilet Leaks. We have had a couple of these now. While there is no visible leaks on the outside of the toilet or the piping, you can hear the water constantly running when there is an internal toilet leak. Fix it, as there is no way to capture the leaking water for some other purpose. Heck, the manufacturer may even send you the replacement parts free of charge, as ours did … twice.

Number 444,  Use Electric Razor (no water). Yes. The down side is that they use electricity which for many of American households is provided by coal burning plants (significant relative air pollution) or natural gas based electric generating stations (consumption of a non-renewable resource).  However, with the increase of solar and wind generated electricity increasing (albeit slowly), in the long term yes electric razors.

Number 445, Front Load Clothes Washing Machine. Again, these devices use less water than top loading clothes washing machines. They have been around since ‘forever’ in other parts of the world and in North America their cost is almost the same as for a good top loading device.

Number 446, Install Low Flow Toilets. Absolutely! No question. Low flow toilets are designed to need less water to properly flush. It will save you a lot of clean water and money at the same time. Get one. Many municipalities offer rebate programs from time to time. Get one (yes, I said it again). Get one for each of your existing toilets in your home and replace your current toilets if they are not low flow.

Number 447, Install Bladder Iniside Toilet Tank. This is for the same reason as the earlier tip on placing a brick inside the toilet tank or the other tip about simply adjusting the water level inside. The goal is to reduce the amount of water in the tank what will be used to flush the toilet. To me, simply adjusting the water level gauge is so much easier.

Number 448, Install Automatic Sensor Faucets. We actually did this within our home. One of our family members has special needs. So, to make her life easier we installed an automatic sendor faucet so she would not have to manually turn the water on and off. From a water conservation pespective, this will save a lot of fresh water when the person does not remember to turn a manual faucet completely off. As well, the water does not run when she brushes her teeth, etc.; it only runs when the tooth brush, her hand, etc. is under the faucet. You can see the red sensor light at the base of the faucet in the picture below.
