Today we review more of the no cost ideas to reduce your home’s clean water consumption. Those of you in drought areas, listen up; lot’s of ideas here for you. Those not in drought areas, these are so simple to do that there’s no reason for you to start doing some of these if for no other reason that to save money through reduced water utility bills month after month after, well, month.
Number 401, Shower Every Other Day. Say on weekends, or on vacation. Personal hygene preference. Just don’t fall into the trap of following your current habits blindly.
Number 402, Take a Navy Shower, and Number 403, Take an Army Shower. What’s the difference? I found a definition our on the Internet as (1) get wet (2) turn off the water (3) lather (4) turn water back on (5) rinse off. I found a few definitions of an Army shower that were similar. Food for thought. Save water.
Number 404, Put Water Jug In Fridge vs Running Tap for Cold Water. How does this save water? Well, it saves you money compared to buying all of those cases of water bottles. It saves consumption of gas on those trucks used to ship the cases of water to your store. As far as water saving, if the water is cold you don’t have to run the tap waiting for water to become cold; simply fill the water jug, put it in the fridge and a short time later it should be sufficiently cold even for the most discriminating pa! Since I’ve started to exercise recently (doctor’s orders), I’ve been drinking a lot more water and use this tip all the time.
Number 405, Check Faucets for Leaks, Especially Little Used. Perhaps its just a new washer that is needed to stop the dripping. However, if you never check your faucets, how will you know whether any of them are leaking?
Number 406, Check Water Lines in Basement for Leaks. Not all leaking faucets drip water into the sink or tub; some will see that leaking water sneak its way down along the water line. If you have (which is why I am a big fan of) a drop ceiling in the basement, a periodic check of the water lines is easy and simple You don’t want to leave a water leak unchecked as not only does it waste a prescious resource but you could end up with this or worse, yikes!

Number 407, Wash Fruits / Veggies in Pan of Water vs Running Tap. Great idea. If you start using this suggestion, what will you do with the water left in the pan after you have finished the rinsing? Why, water the indoor plants or even the outdoor plants, of course!
Number 408, Flush Toilet Only When Necessary. We received many suggestions on this same idea. Many people gave us the axiom, if its yellow, mellow … if its brown, flush it down. While is this a pretty personal hygiene related preference, you get the idea.

Number 409, Don’t Use Toilets As Waste Basket. Absolutely, that is what waste baskets are for. Every time you flush the toilet just to get rid of something that could go in the waste basket you are literally flushing money (and a scarce resource) down the drain.
Number 410, Use Old Water in Kettle for Plants vs Down the Drain. We tend to simply put more and more and more water in the kettle. We really should empty it every now and again to get rid of any sediment which may have collected. So, if you do this (more frequently that we do), don’t simply pour it down the drain; rather, pour it (once its temperature has reached room temperature) on your indoor plants.
