Scotts Turf Builder Fertilizer from Home Depot

We were fortunate to receive some gift cards ourselves from The Home Depot to help us with our spring lawn and garden clean up this year.

So, with us focusing a little more than in prior years on conservation of our money, we decided to discontinue the lawn service we had used during the past two years and see if we could take care of our lawn ourselves.

I know, I know….how hard can it be? Well, it shouldn’t be that hard, right? And that’s the point. This is no time to be spending money unwisely.

And, this is the first year in our area where the local government has made it illegal to use most lawn and garden chemicals used to fight weeds.

So, it’s really important to focus on having health grass to reduce the area within which the weeds have a chance to grow.

First step, rake the lawn. It took several days but once we raked the thatches of dead grass, leaves from the fall, twigs, etc. which had accumulated over the winter, we ended up with 4 of those large paper recyclable garden waste bags.

Now, next would typically be aerating the lawn. But you know what? We had this done twice last year, once in the spring and once in the fall. I think I’ll try and save $75 or so and not have it done this year, especially since I took the time for all that raking.

Next, a good lawn fertilizer. And, I really don’t have the patience to go four times to the local garden center to purchase the in season fertilizer. That is not only a waste of my time but also of gas in my car.

For this we choose Scotts Turf Builder. You can see the two large bags we purchased in the above picture next to our spreader which we have purchased several years ago in our prior home and simply kept around for grass seeding. Sometimes it is good to be a pack rat.  ;)

What I like about this variety of fertilizer is that you can use in the spring, summer or fall. You likely have noticed that some fertilizer packages say that such and such fertilizer is a spring, or just a summer or simply a fall variety. To me, that is a waste of money because to use it once I will purchase a smaller bag which like anything else purchased in a small quantity costs more per unit.

I also like that the instructions say its OK to fertilize without having to ensure that I water the lawn right after. To fertilize our lawn it took exactly one half of one bag. So, I have enough to last me all year. I like to have the lawn fertilizer placed on our lawn 4 times a year. So for us it will mean late April (which is when we actually applied this fertilizer in this article), around the 2nd week of June, again around the last week of July and for the fourth time in early September. That way the lawn has a constant feeding of nutrients it needs.

I’m still looking for grass seed to also spread on our lawn. Most of our lawn is in the shade part of the day and in the sun the other part; around a 50 – 50 split. I haven’t found it yet, but I’ll keep looking. It won’t be hard to find some.
