Replacement Front Door - Vendor Inspection

April 12th, 2009 · No Comments

Yesterday I wrote about the results from my conversation with the manager of the home improvement building supplies store through whom our replacement front door was purchased and installed.

So what transpired after this conversion and the subsequent appointment for the following Monday?

You know what happened, right? Go ahead … guess.

What happened to us last year during the installation of of the initial replacement front door occurred again.

No show … no call … nothing.

Sigh. Ever feel like Charlie Brown running to kick that football and Lucy pulls it away at the last minute? :)

I called the store asking for the person with whom I spoke on the same day the prior week when I spoke with the store manager and he was out for lunch. He returned my call late in the day, apologized, and we agreed to have him and a second person come over two days later.

This time they arrived (25 minutes late) and here is what they determined.

Extreme Fascia Door Frame Separation

After we experienced this same issue following the installation of the 1st replacement door, the installer took extra precautions when he installed the 2nd replacement door.

What he did was to insert a screw through the wood at the top of the new door frame, before the black exterior cladding was applied, into the fascia. The theory was that this screw would sufficiently hold down the fascia preventing it from buckling again.

Sounded good.

Fascia and Front Door Frame Separation

As was discovered upon this inspection, only one such screw seems to have been installed. And it was installed to the right of the right most buckle in the above picture.

From what the inspector could tell either there were no further screws inserted along the rest of the top of the new door frame (we didn’t see any screw holes in the fascia) or screws had been installed but had not held the fascia.

The inspector agreed that something needed to be done.

He said that I would be hearing from them to arrange a date / time for the installer to return.

So, I waited.
