Recently we have written about some of the features which were part of the ENERGY STAR replacement windows we had installed in our home over the past year and a bit.
Can they leak?
What I mean by that is can ENERGY STAR rated windows experience a broken seal allowing moisture build-up inside the (in our case) two panes of glass?
Not necessarily a silly question. I mean, if these windows cost more than those without such rating, perhaps they are constructed sufficiently different so that the breaking of a seal will not occur?
What do I know? I am, as you know, not a professional contractor. I’m just a simply home owner like you.
Well, the answer is … yes.
In our case, we had two such windows experience air leaks this past winter. And, they were different types of windows.
How do you know if one of your windows has an air leak? First, here is a collection of pictures showing the air leak within the window in one of our bedrooms. You will notice that this is a slider type of window, meaning that it opens and closes by sliding the window to the left or right (as opposed to up or down, or out and in).
Here is a picture of the window itself.
Next is a close-up of the same window. What you are looking for is that oval moisture buildup over on the upper to middle right side.

So, now you know what the evidence of a broken window seal and what moisture buildup looks like inside a window.
Was this caused by us? Was the window seal caused by the opening and closing of the window? No.
Tomorrow we will show you that this can happen even in windows which are stationary, the second type of ENEGY STAR replacement window within which we have encountered a broken window seal.
