We have had an increasing number of visitors to our site, DailyHomeRenoTips.com, in the past month who have arrived from Internet searches on windows. It seems with the Spring comes window replacement activity as well.
Which, of course stands to reason; who would want to voluntarily replace windows in their home in the middle of winter; unless of course the window manufacturer / reseller provided a financial incentive to do so?
So, to accommodate those guests, and everyone else who might be interested, we thought we would write a few articles on the different features of our new replacement ENERGY STAR windows.
Do notice that while our windows are ENERGY STAR rated for our climate, these features are in now way dependant on having windows with this rating.
Today we will focus on the screens.
Now, it might seem like a waste of space writing about window screens. However, I am not in the window industry … or even the home renovation industry … to me these screens are a little unique.
In all of the homes we have lived in before our current home, the window screens fit into the window frame on the inside of the window.
With this type of window screen, sooner or later some of the screens would start to warp, leaving small gaps between the window frame and the frame of the screen.
Well, no so with the screens on our windows. If you look at the picture below, focus on where the frame meets the window frame.

What I want to draw your attention to is how the window frame is overlapped by the extended frame of the screen. Here is the best picture I have showing the overlapping part of the screen itself:

Notice how the frame of the screen is extended about ½ of an inch beyond the screen itself to overlap the window frame. Yes, it still fits within the window frame and when in place the frame of the screen is up against the frame of the window. Yes, this ½ inch extension over laps the inside of the window frame.
Here is a picture from the outside showing the open window with the screen inserted in position:

We have never had screens designed for windows in any of our prior homes. What a great and yet simple idea.
So, if / when any of the screens for our windows start to warp in the years to come, we should still not have any insects, flying or otherwise, entering our home when the windows are open.
