Air Leaks Around Basement Fireplace Insert – 2 – The Fix – DAP Tex

Yesterday we wrote about our discovery of air leaks around the outside of the fireplace insert in our basement.

Today, we write about the approach we took to stop those leaks.

If you recall, this is what the areas where cold air was rushing into our basement looked like from yesterday.

Remember, these areas are outside of the fireplace itself.

I went to our local Goodes Home Hardware store with the intention of purchasing some of that expanding foam insulation that is used around window and door frames. When I read the labelling for some of the different cans available to purchase, most of them said that this was not appropriate for interior application.

I then came across this one from Dap called DapTex. It is a “…multi-purpose insulating foam sealant [which] is a latex-based formula that will not over-expand like polyurethane foam…[that] seals out drafts, eliminates energy loss & prevents pest infiltration … & can be painted with latex paint once cured.”

I liked the ‘can be painted’ aspect as eventually (when I have no idea) one of the things we want to do in the basement is to get rid of all that paisley wall paper and paint the walls above the lower wood panelling. The label also said that it was very easy to clean up. I’ve found that expanding polyurethane foam insulation very messy to clean up.

So I proceeded to apply the DAP Tex material in the three areas noted earlier where I found the air leaks.

What does this look like after the installation? Here are some pictures.

You can see in some angles one is able to see the white DAP Tax like the photograph above …

…while in other angles the while insulating materials is barely noticeable.

And, remember I mentioned earlier that our plan is to eventually remove the wall paper and paint the walls, so even having the white showing is fine by me……especially since we rarely use our basement.
