Exterior Toilet Leak – Part 1 – Will The Madness Never End?

Two weeks ago we wrote about a leak that we had within our less than 1 year old toilet.

Well, we are back again. This time it is a completely different leak How did I find it?

Well, on the weekend I was about to make a trip to my local hardware / building materials supply store to purchase more ceiling tiles as I had run out replacing all of the basement ceiling tiles that been damaged by the water leaking from the en suite shower which was installed less than a year ago in our major home renovation effort.

So, just before I left for the store, I went downstairs to confirm the count of how many more ceiling tiles needed replacing when I noticed that one of new ceiling tiles I had just replaced was exhibiting water stains. It was one that was just under the en suite shower that Bennett had fixed.

Needless to say, I was … well, not pleased.

So I cancelled my trip to the store, left a message for Bennett and fumed until the Notre Dame football game came on TV much later in the day.

On Monday Bennett came over (which was really nice of him to come over so quickly) and as I was about to point out to him this stained ceiling tile, my eye caught another ceiling tile over against the exterior back wall which was showing a much larger stain than it had on Saturday.

Geesh.

When we removed that ceiling tile the picture below shows what we found.

Yuk. This large black pipe was the drain pipe to …. the toilet in the above en suite. Can you see the water leak trails on the black drain pipe in the picture below?

But we just fixed the internal leak. Did we do something now to cause this external leak?

Well, no. Remember that above I said “…tile over against the exterior back wall which was showing a much larger stain than it had on Saturday”. I had thought that the water stain on this tile was caused by the shower leak, that somehow the leaking water from the shower had made it’s way over the the far wall.

Nope,

So, nice that Bennett was over when we noticed this situation. He took the time to address both water leaking issues.

What caused the leak from the toilet in the en suite?

We will report on that tomorrow. To continue to the next article in this short series, simply select on this link to Part 2.
