Basement Ceiling Leak – Part 19 – Wall Tile and Grout

We showed in Part 18 how the 4 inch by 4 inch floor tiles were layed on the floor of the en suite shower as part of our home renovation repair. Below is a picture of the new shower floor before the grout.

So, the next step is to put the grout amongst the floor tile the day after the tile was layed.

Notice how the grout (per the picture below) is a darker shade than the grout on the existing wall tiles yet is a nice complement to both the floor and wall tiles.

Once that was done, the following day (once the grout amongst the floor tile had dried) was to place the wall tile at the base of the shower walls. A few comments about this are in order.

First, notice Bennett did not apply the thin-set mortar to the base of the wall where the wall tile would be placed. Rather, he applied the thin-set to the back of the tile itself as shown in the picture below.

Next, remember that one of the issues with the first shower floor was that the wall tiles were first installed prior to the floor tiles. This time the floor tiles extent to each wall so the wall tile is on top of the floor tile (also shown in the picture above).

This means that water coming down from the wall during the shower will go directly on the floor tile (and not on the grout or the silicon caulking) which will then follow the slope of the floor tile to the floor drain.

Now, the next task down was to connect the new drain to the existing plumbing, followed by fixing some un-finished finishings around the shower handles. Until next time.
