Now, remember that our new shower drain grate was 4 inches X 4 inches square. So Bennett started the tiling from the drain grate outward from the grate in the center of the shower floor towards each wall.
He divided, visually, the shower floor into 4 quarters. He started from the grate out towards the right side of the built-in shower bench, first applying another layer of thin-set mortar (the third if you are keeping count from past articles in this series) for that 1/4 of that floor followed by laying the 4 inch by 4 inch tile.
As you can tell from the pictures in this article Bennett does not use the spacers; personal preference.
Once these tiles were layed for the particular quarter of the floor, he would then measure the distance from the edge of the outer floor tiles to the particular walls and then go outside and cut the needed tiles to the required size, returning and then laying those cut tiles.
Notice that Bennett does not just lay the tiles onto the tin-set mortar as is; rather, he first applies some thin-set mortar onto the back of each tile before laying it onto the thin-set already on the floor.
This process continued until the next quarter of the shower floor was layed with tile ….
… and the next …..
… and the next.
Next up, the wall tiles.
