In Part 19, we talked about the need for more colour in our front garden.
Now, enter the Mums … or to be more precise Chrysanthemums.
If you recall, way back in Part 1, we stated that our goal was to makeover our front gardens so it would be as low maintenance, no maintenance as possible. I wanted slow growing plants, plants that would appear year after year, plants that would need little from me yet provide me with visual beauty. Yes, I wanted a one way street!
In my youth I worked on my uncle’s Chrysanthemum farm. It was great fun. And, I learned enough to know that Mums (as they are commonly known because after all, who can pronounce, let alone spell correctly Chrysanthemums
) provide wonderful colour in the fall and are perennials, returning year after year.
Cath likes to buy potted plants and place the pots at the front door for a splash of colour during the year. A few days ago she purchased two large posts of Mums at Costco.
The potted Petunias need more sun than what they can get by the front door as you can see from the picture above. Notice you can also have multiple pots with different flowering plants at the same time to add even more colour, as shows in the picture above. So, add a splash of colour in the fall with the Mums.
The really cool part is that once the Mums have reached their peak, and while the weather is sufficiently mild for the plants to take root, we will move them from the pots by the front door and plant them in the front garden.
I’m not sure where we will plant them just yet, but they will go there and give us year after year of fall colour. Tulips are for the spring. Mums are for the fall. And Mothers are for all year ’round.
Once the mid-fall arrives in our neck of the woods, we’ll plant them in our made-over garden and show you exactly where we put them.
