Energy Conservation In The Home - Where To Start?

July 24th, 2008 · No Comments

It’s hard to swat a fly these days without hearing on the radio or the television or the Internet about how we should be doing our part to conserve energy.

But, where to start? How does one know what to do first? What about how much different energy conservation products cost? What about the biggest bang for the buck? If solar panels were so great to produce electricity, wouldn’t everyone have them by now?

OK, take a deep breath. :-)

Help is on the way.

You have likely noticed that last week we introduced a new page to our Daily Home Renovation Tips site called Energy Conservation.

This new page to our site contains a collection of different energy conservation tips for the home owner. But, it is so much more.

While we are strong proponents of starting with a home energy audit :-) you don’t have to wait until you have one done. And what if you are fortunate to own your own home, what then?

Some energy conservation activities require a change in habits which can be hard if down right next to impossible to do, while others are very expensive (several thousands of dollars)

So, the Daily Home Renovation Tips approach to energy conservation tips is to provide you with a listing of different activities you can undertake to reduce the energy consumed by your residence.

We have provided different categories in our listing for you to use to locate the collection of tips that are relevant to you. We have also used subjective ratings within each category to rank each tip. Words like cheap, moderate, simple, complex, and so on mean different things to different people; however, we have used such generalizations rather than try to actually calculate specific numbers which, while helpful, are totally dependant on a wide variety of factors.

The DailyHomeRenoTips Energy Conservation Spreadsheet is too wide to be displayed across the page. If you would like to access it on line to see all of the columns and categorizations at once, simply select this link to the DailyHomeRenoTips Energy Conservation Tips file.

For now, we present our list sorted by the Type of Energy Reduction achieved by the tip, namely All (or every type), heating, cooling, electricity, and water heating.

Our favorite tip? Yes, it is to have a home energy audit completed on your home. You can do some of it yourself or you can have a professional do it for you.  The report from a home energy audit will tell you for your own home the different energy conservation tasks you can perform to reduce your consumption of non-renewable resources as well as to save you money.

Tomorrow, we will look at a different grouping we use for the same energy conservation tips.
