If You Need a Wheel Barrel, Get This Instead - Part 1 - The Need

May 29th, 2008 · 1 Comment

As you will see in the near future from a new series of articles about the renovation of our front garden, we are working outside the house much of the time this spring and early summer.

Some of our activities include: cleaning the leaves, branches, dead plants, and other such debris from the past winter; moving the 6 cubic yards of top soil from the pile left by the garden center’s truck on our driveway onto the front and back gardens; moving decorative stones from the main garden around to the back gardens; moving various plants from the front garden, again, around to the back side garden, and so on.

In the past, the tool of choice would have been my trusty wheel barrel. However, the last one I had ‘broke down’ around 4 years ago. I went shopping recently for a replacement, knowing all of this gardening work I had ahead of me.

I wanted one that had two wheels in the front for added stability. The last thing I needed to worry about was the rapid drop in the slope of our property on either side of the house when I was trying to move various garden plants and materials to the back gardens (our home has a walkout basement which as any of you may know who have lived in such a house sees the back yard anywhere from 9 to 12 feet or so lower than the front yard).

I checked the inventory online for the the first store I was planning to go to for my new wheel barrel. It said they were in stock. Of course, when I went there all they had was the wheel barrel …….. minus the handle and the wheels; not of much use to me.

I then stopped off since it was close by at our local international building supply retailer who likely had more stock. When I walked into the garden center I had one of those ‘movie moments’. You know the type. A boy walks into a room and across the way sees the girl of his dreams. Everything happens in slow motion. One of the Barry White songs starts to play in the back ground (you know which ones!). A gentle breeze starts. A spot light shines on the girl who gracefully moves her head from one side to the next allowing the breeze take her long flowing hair from one side to the next. Yes, you even start to drool a little.  :-)

All of a sudden you are snapped back into reality as a 215 pound sweaty, burly sales associate taps you on the shoulder and says ‘Can I help you sir?’. You reply ‘Um, ah …. what the  heck is that!’ as you point to the object of your day dream.

Return tomorrow to see what grabbed us in such a movie moment way. OK, you have read this far so I feel compelled to show you what we will be reviewing tomorrow. Here is the beauty that captured my attention and causes me to come clean and tell you that this little beauty has replaced forever any notion of me buying or ever using a wheel barrel again.
