And, I don’t mean to be shouting.
However, I keep coming across people or organizations who should know better yet are incorrectly classifying the new solar charged electric 24V lawn mower from Linamar Consumer Products which is sold under the Epic, Utopia and Solaris brands.
The message does not seem to be getting through so I will devote an entire article on Daily Home Renovation Tips to this one feature.
So, let me try to set the record straight.
Ladies and Gentlemen. This new lawn mower is self-propelled. Yes, it is both a cordless electric lawn mower that is also a self-propelled lawn mower.
It is not just the gas-powered lawn mowers that are self propelled. Look at the picture below. Look in the upper right area of the picture. You have the main handle. Then on the top or front of the upper part of the main handle you have a small black handle that is used to keep the brushless motor running.
Then, there, do you see it? At the top of the main handle. Yes, the small silver bar that is just resting on top and to the right of the main handle. Yes, that is the one that controls the self-propelled feature.

Let me give you just three examples of where ‘experts’ are not recognizing this feature.
First, I went to a store of the international building materials retailer who is one of three in Canada (and could be the only retailer in the United States) where this new product has been launched this year. When I walked by the mower in the store with a store sales associate I mention that I thought it was a really good lawn mower.
She started to tell me of her husband’s back and how he needs a self propelled lawn mower.
I told her it was even though it is not electric.
She went back to tell me that the mower was not one that her husband could use because his back needed one that was self-propelled. Was I talking to myself? She totally ignored what I was saying.

Second, a reporter on a news radio station in the area where we live, 680News, started to reveal the lawn mower ratings form a certain well known independent product testing organization for consumers. She talked about the highest rated gas-powered self propelled mower category and how the self-propelled is a really nice features for those who find pushing a gas-powered lawn mower a challenge. When she talked about cordless electric, she did not mention that there was a cordless electric mower that was also self propelled. She totally this self-propelled electric mower. And, that it was sold in three different retailers in Canada.
Third, an Internet based organization exists which collects ratings on many varied consumer products has a category for lawn mowers. Again, they have a sub-category for gas-powered self-propelled lawn mowers where they talk about this feature. However, they have only one category for cordless electric and totally ignore that there is one (the one above) that is also self-propelled.
Well, there you have it.
Now, you won’t be making the same mistake, right? You know that there is a self-propelled cordless electric lawn mower on the market and, with the solar charging station, is the most environmentally friendly lawn mower available with a motor today.
Spread the word. There is no longer any single reason why one needs to purchase a gas-powered lawn mower which pollutes the air.

How’d it work out for you with the new mulching blade?
2 Dan // May 29, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Hi Eric,
I don’t know yet. We have the mulching blade but haven’t mowed the lawn in 2 weeks due to:
1. trying to replicate the conditions of the long grass usage we wrote about previously but this time with the mulching blade and
2. we rebuilt our front gardens over the long weekend so had time for nothing else (yes, we will be starting a new series on that project soon) and
3. I want to install the exterior solar blinds over the window inserts on our French Doors in our kitchen eating area now that they have proved themselves to us from our prior articles.
4. I have some well overdue painting assighments that I have to get to this weekend because we are to receive our Dreemscreen retractable blinds next week to be instlled in that same unpainted area.
I’m hoping in a week to 10 days to use the mulching blade and write about it.
Cheers,
Dan

A great informational review on the Solaris! I didn’t where you referenced a seller of the product in the US. I would appreciate your info on this if you have it available.
Thanks!

Hey Jack,
It is sold in the US at Home Depot stores in the Boston and Seattle areas. I have heard that they may consider shipping outside their city if you contact them directly.
I understand that Linamar Consumer Products, the manufacturer, is to have a full nation-wide rollout next spring just as it did this year across Canada through three different retailers, including Home Depot.
Cheers,
Dan

Hmmmm. maybe this is a silly question but i have to ask… Although self-propelled, will it allow the user to push mow with it?
6 Dan // Jun 3, 2008 at 4:47 pm
Hey Vince,
Not silly at all.
Yes you can; although I will be the first to admit that it takes more effort than my old Mastercraft 18 V corded electric that is not self-propelled. I have never used any self-propelled before so I cannot tell you if it takes more or less effort to puch manually than other self propelled models.
Sorry.
I hope that helps.

Just used this lawnmower for the first time last weekend! It was fun though I can’t comment on it much as this was my first time mowing in 5 years (lived in a condo). The only complaint I have is that as soon as you put the battery in it starts to beep (which can be very annoying when I’m emptying the bag). I had to slightly remove one of the batteries to stop the beeping as I got my grass bag and emptied it out. It also got annoying when I stopped mowing to talk to a neighbour while mowing! Is there anyway to stop the beeping?? Thanks!

Hi AG,
Thanks for stopping by our wet site.
As far as stopping the beeping noise, it is set to automatically start beeping after 10 seconds of the batteries being placed in the mower. This is to remind the person that they are in there and not to forget to remove them once they are finished mowing to place them back in the charging station.
Having used the mower for a full (almost) season now I have just gotten used to the noice myself.
Cheers,
Dan
