Exterior Replacement Door - Part 2 - The Measurements

March 9th, 2008 ¡¤ No Comments

In Part 1 we left off being told the following when we approached the order desk at the big box building supply store to order our front door:

  • ¡±You can, but I don¡¯t really recommend you order the door today.¡±
  • ¡°The sales price is only for doors ordered this weekend.¡±

First things first. The reason why the sales associated recommended that we not order the door that day was the measurements. We did measure the right things (height, width of the door, of the side lights). Heck, even Bruce, our primary contractor for our renovations, checked our measurements.

However, as was explained to us, you don¡¯t want to mess up the measurements. If we took the wrong measurements, shame on us and we have no recourse if the new door does not fit. And, it would cost us just $50, which would be taken off the price of the door once we actually placed our order.

So, the sales associate explained that we should simply place an order for a measurement specialist to come to our house and record the measurements. This would be a person who measures door openings all the time. If there was anything wrong with the door based on these measurements, we are off the hook. Sounded good to us.

One problem. The door measurement dude would not be able to come to our home until some time the next week, after the sale and 1 year no interest financing would be available. Once I pointed out the illogic of such a situation, the sales associate called someone else in the store to see how the situation could be addressed.

After a few minutes we were promised that the sale price would be honoured. The sales associate made a note in their computer system. We were told that this note would advise the next sales associate we dealt with upon our return following the measurements being taken that we could receive the 20% sale price on the door we selected.

So, away we went having paid the $50 measurement fee. We then received the phone call in a few days to arrange the measurement which occurred the week after we had ordered the measurement. The person came, recorded the various measurements of the current door, the opening, depth, and so on. We were told that he would fax the measurements to the big box building supplies store that evening and we could then go and place our order.

We went the next day and discovered to our disappointment that the fax was not received by the big box building supply store. The person we spoke with informed us that she would call us when she received the fax. To make a long story short, it took 15 days from September 13th, when we went to order the door and came away only ordering the measurement, until September 28th when we could and did place our order.

Return tomorrow to learn about our lessons learned about ordering an external door. And, see if the note that the sales associate left in their computer system was sufficient for us to receive the 20% discount and no interest or payments for a full year.
