Today we begin a new multi-part series which could be titled door handle installation for dummies because it is a fairly easy task compared to, for example, hanging the actual door and because it’s something that I could do who has no prior renovation experience.

Here’s the situation in our case. The basement bedroom we established during the remodeling did not have a natural closet so we had a small walk-in closet built.

The door for the closet was recycled from the main floor of the house which we were replacing. It used to be the door to the main bathroom. Yes, no added cost! And, yes, environmentally friendly because we recycled it from the upstairs rather than use resources to have a new one built.

Once the closet was constructed, door way framed and recycled door hung we still needed to install a new door handle. Interior doors usually come with the hole for the door handle already created. And, since this door was recycled from the upstairs floor, this was our starting point as well:

So, our starting point was actually with the door handle package:

Once it was opened the contents looked like the picture below. Notice that it comes with two face plates for the door (the narrow ones in the picture below), one fully rectangle and the other with rounded corners, from which you can choose the most appropriate for your situation.

Notice that the handle was a lever type. Depending on whether you need the door handle to be placed on the left or the right of the door handle opening, you may need to open the handle and switch it around. It’s not hard to do. The package comes with the small little mettle ‘pick’ that you use to open the handle for this purpose. However, this time we were fortunate and the handle was on the correct side of the opening for our door.

We would also need the following tools for the installation:

• Drill, bits and extension code (to drill the holes for the screws which would hold the place to the door frame
• Screwdriver
• Utility knife
• Hammer

Why the utility knife and hammer? Well, let’s just say that in our house, no renovation is every as one reads about in the magazines or sees on home renovation T.V. shows
