The Romance and Adventure of The Renovation

February 10th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Wow, do those TV shows about do-it-yourself, home makeover, kitchen makeover, and the like sure do make home renovations sound romantic and adventurous, for those who have never previously been involved in one.

Renovations are hard, frustrating, dirty activities. Where were the T.V. cameras when we were doing our renovations in the summer when drywall dust was everywhere and the lad’s were sweating buckets and buckets when they were in the attic installing the recessed lighting?

Where were the T.V shows when we had to order our 4th dumpster because we had so gosh darn much garbage?

Yes, the finished product, if it is finished, can be very enjoyable and immensely gratifying. But do not go into a home renovation project blinded by the T.V. shows and expect everything to go according to your plan.

  • It will be unbearably sunny or a driving rain storm on the day when the roofer was scheduled to install the replacement shingles.
  • It will be too cold to finish the new gate in the backyard to keep the family pet inside.
  • You will run short of materials and need to go get some right now!
  • You will have disagreements with every building material or service provider during your renovation.
  • Oh, and yes, your definition of commitments to agreed upon dates will be only in your own mind and not in the mind of the supplier.

Does this mean that you should not attempt a home renovation? Of course not. The more detail your plan, the more that plan is updated throughout the renovation and the more involved you are in the renovation the better prepared you will be to deal and make fact based decisions when project puzzle pieces do not fall into place.

Go into a home renovation project with your eye’s wide open, knowing that you don’t know everything, that you actually do know some things but that you have to experience it to ‘experience’ the renovation. It is not all a romantic adventure, regardless how wonderful the end result.
