Yesterday we ended Part 3 in this series on what caused us several hours of wasted time to install this wonderful product from the Leviton Manufacturing Company, Inc.
There is a very, very small toggle switch at the base of the base wall switch that is used to prevent the ceiling light from being turned on. Can you find it in the picture below?
Look beneath the OFF button. This tiny toggle switch is at the bottom of the white plastic switch plate currently in the off position. The purpose of this switch, according to the person at the manufacturer’s toll free installation assistance phone number is when you want to change the light bulb, you can prevent someone from accidentally turning the light on.
I had never heard of this in any wall switch I had previously installed…….not that I have installed more than 7 or 8 in our prior houses. This is a nice feature, but for gosh sakes, mention this switch in your packaging or installation instruction insert. At least mention it in the Troubleshooting Guide section of the installation instructions, please. Oh, and you should educate the sales associates of your retailers so they are aware (they didn’t tell us either). This darn toggle switch caused me around 3 to 4 hours of attempted trouble shooting time.
Once that was resolved, the rest of the installation was a snap. Put cover on the newly installed wall switch….check. Locate where we wanted the second wall switch to be installed by the door to the garage…..check. Use the Anchoring Fasteners (discussed in a previous Product Review post) to attach the second wall switch to the desired location…..check (shown here before the cover plate was affixed to the unit).
And, finally, affix the cover plate to the second wall switch unit using the screws provided…..check.
It works great. This is a terrific product. It does just what we want it to do and we highly recommend it. But for goodness sakes, let’s improve the information on the product packaging, the installation instruction insert, on the product web site and, finally, let’s remember to train all of the retailer’s sales associates about the uniqueness of the product, OK?
