Today we start a new category of posts and a new series on finishing.
What do we mean when we say ‘finishing‘?
No, not a type of a nail, as in a finishing nail.
Rather, we are referring to the small details of any makeover with if not done will be noticed that the job is not finished, but if done right, will not be noticeable at all.
You see, our family is a huge fan of the Walt Disney company. Why? Well, the reason which relates to this category is because of the Walt Disney company’s attention to detail. Have you ever watched one of their animated movies and notices the attention to detail? Take Disney’s Little Mermaid. Ever notice all of the different colours of the fish and vegetation? In other words, the movie is not done until it is finished.
What about if you are fortunate enough to visit and spend time in any of their theme parks? Have you noticed the attention to detail in their theme parks? Sometimes their attention to detail of their buildings, exhibits and rides are just breathtaking. Like on California Soaring how they have not just the smell of orange blossoms but also the gush of wind when you see the view over an orange grove. In other words, the attraction is not complete until it is finished.
Auditors and accountants know what we mean (guess it’s in part because I used to be one). The income tax return is not finished until all of the deductions and calculations are triple checked. The annual report of a corporation is not sent to the printers until it is proof read 5 times. The job is not done until it is finished.
For example, which of the following two pictures below would you say represent a finished renovation, the top or the bottom, if either:
Would you consider the installation of French Doors finished if you saw this:
And, would you consider this an example of finished work on the stairs:
Those are just three of the many examples we will write about in this section. As we progress through different posts in this new category, you will see that we are not the experts on how to finish certain things in our home renovations…….and, depending on your perspective, how we finish something may be different from your own standards.
It should make for an interesting category as we experience how we try to finish various aspects of our home renovation. And, can any remodeling or improvement job ever be truly finished?

Been there - done that - still doing it. We MOVED a house (the state was four-laning where it was previously located) and started gutting it. It’s no been 12 years (and two additions) and we are STILL doing renovations.
The trim, patches, and other “finishing” touches really do make all the difference in the world.
Good luck on all that you are doing.
PS. It’s said that if you can survive remodeling then you can survive anything
