Big box building supply stores. You know the ones. With all their advertising and promotions, it is easy to forget that they are not the only game in town.
In today’s tip, we have to give a plug to the specific small box store near where we live, specifically Goodes Home Hardware.
Why are we doing this for, what we believe is, the first time in our blog’s brief history? Well, it is due to the personal service they have given us continually since we started our renovation.
Please do not mis-understand. We did not purchase most of our materials from them. But, that’s our fault. At first, we were so new to the area we only knew of the big box building supplies retailer so out of habit we went there. But the more we went to Goodes Home Hardware, the more we appreciated the difference.
It was rare that we had to ask for help. Usually they were asking us before we asked them. Guess I still have that ‘lost’ look when I go looking for renovation materials.
I have an even more ‘lost’ look when I go to the big box store, but to be honest it is very rare that I can find someone to help.
They answer all our questions in language we can understand. They show different products, explaining the difference between them. They can actually find their products quickly in the store, which is not something I can say about some of their big box competitors.
And, if they are out of stock for an item I am interested in they can get on the phone with their distributor immediately and find out the next shipment. Oh, and when I later call to find out if they have received the shipment, I don’t need to use a call answering system and make numerous selections to actually get a live person (again as is the case with certain big box stores).
So, here’s to Goodes Home Hardware. If you are in the area, (they are on the border of Oshawa and Courtice on HIghway #2 just east of Townline Road) just drop by and say hello. They are incredibly friendly. Oh, and ask them any question about hardware materials, home improvements or why they are all just so darn nice and friendly!
Yes, we are not providing a URL link to their web site. We can’t to that. Why? Well, it is because there is none. To view products you need to go to the main Home Hardware web site.

Thanks for your plug for the small box stores. I have found–while I’m not a great decorator, but I do decorate–that the big stores have the cookie cutter mentality and if you look in the smaller stores, you really can find the one of a kind decor; in addition to the personal service…which is always a plus:)
