Home Renovation Tip - Re-Covering Obtrusive Support Beams

November 30th, 2007 · No Comments

Today we have as our daily home renovation tip the before and after picture of the eating area.

BEFORE

  • Wall paper on the wall (removed in the After picture)
  • Railing to the right of the pic between the wall and the obtrusive support beam (also removed in the After pic)
  • Window covering of the sliding door to the deck (replaced in the After pic)
  • Covering of the obtrusive support team painted blue (more on this in a minute) so it stands out against the wallpaper
  • Tile floor covering (replaced by hardwood flooring)
  • Ceiling light / fan combination (replaced by pot lights)
  • Hanging plant to the far right (removed and not replaced)
  • To the extreme lower left of the pic you can see the butcher’s block counter top that was in the original kitchen

Old Eating

AFTER
In the After picture below you can see:

  • Painted wall the same color of paint as the family room After pic’s posted earlier in the week (see the Tips with Pictures category on the far right of this blog)
  • New window coverings on the sliding door are a three panel vertical blinds
  • hardwood on the floor
  • Ceiling light / fan combination removed (for pot lights which can’t be seen from the After pic)
  • Notice on the window to the left the pull down shade (if you look closely you can see through it…..it is the same window covering on the Family Room’s windows)

new Eating

Now, also notice in the After picture the not-so-obtrusive support beam on the extreme right. Notice that not only is it no longer blue but there appears to be vertical lines on it. They are not lines, but ‘piping’ (which is our layman’s way of describing groves carved into the new covering of the support beam). The piping resembles the same piping that is on part of our new kitchen design (kitchen pic’s coming in a weekend post).

Covered Support Beam in Kitchen

If you compare the Before and the After pictures, focusing on the vertical support beam you should (at least it does to us) that the blue paint on the support beam’s casing in the Before pic makes it stand out….and the railing from the support beam to the back wall cuts off traffic flow from the eating area to the Family Room. Whereas, having the color of the support beam matching the trim as well as the kitchen cabinets, and the removal of the railing (although that can’t be seen from this After pic) makes the support beam blend more in to the background and less obtrusive to the traffic flow between the two rooms.

Our kitchen designer, Jim, suggested the re-covering of the support beam. We are glad he did.
