Home Renovation Tip – Signs of a Good / Great Kitchen Designer

Kitchen Pendant and Ceiling Lights 300x224 Home Renovation Tip Signs of a Good / Great Kitchen DesignerAs y’all know, we are amateurs in home renovation. Having said that, here is our top 5 list of indicators of a good or great kitchen design firm (and yes, all of these were exhibited by Jim, our kitchen design specialist):

1. Innovative ideas

The idea of removing the bulkheads was great. We never would have thought of that. Also having any corner turned into a 45 degree angle (eliminates constantly running into the corner of the island). Having a 2 foot deep pantry (so it actually can hold lots of stuff). He, together with Bennett the installer extraordinaire, came up with an idea to cover the support beam that is in the middle-ish of the kitchen eating area which has worked wonders.

2. Patience

Jim was very patient with us. Yes, this is his business and yes anyone in business has an objective to make money, otherwise they won’t stay in business very long. He was very willing to let us take our time, ask all kinds of questions, likely all of which he has heard time and again.

3. Cost Saving Suggestions

We wanted solid wood cabinets to go with our solid wood floor. Once we saw the price, our jaws dropped. Jim asked about our color scheme (since the house was still under renovation we hadn’t yet started to paint the walls). He recommended the white MDF cabinets with a brown-ish covering (Tuscan Canvas) together with a dark counter top to go with our intended dark hardwood flooring. It worked great (as all of you can see once we find our camera and can take pictures to load onto our site…..still haven’t unpacked everything yet)

4. Multiple Visits Before The Deal

Jim was the only one who volunteered to come out to the house to personally take the measurements. His competitors did not. He was out I believe 2 or 3 times before we signed the deal and made the decisions. Not only were his measurements more accurate than ours (we didn’t even notice that the bedroom hallway ends in the kitchen…..we thought it ended above the kitchen), but he also got that visual of how the kitchen faces south with a picture view of the forest behind our home, and so on.

5. Multiple Visits After The Deal

During the installation, Jim was out several times. There was one time that the counter top installers were over and they asked me about where to cut the counter top to install the electrical outlet. I was working from home that day and on the phone so I called Jim and he came right over and told the installers not to cut the counter top. Now that’s service.
